DAY 3RD ON 3M/SCHAFFER SETS 200 BACK RECORD – CLARION PLACES 17TH AT NCAA'S
(Birmingham, Alabama): Clarion diver sophomore diver
Kristin Day (Reynoldsville/Dubois) was 3
rd on three meter and
Gabriella Schaffer (Fr. Reading) set a new school record in the 200 backstroke while leading Clarion to a 17
th place team finish at the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Swimming and Diving national Championships which concluded on Saturday night.
Held at the CrossPlex facility in Birmingham, Alabama and part of the Division II Winter Sports Festival, Drury won the team title scoring with 432.5 points, Wayne State is second with 388 and Cal San-Diego third with 313 points. Clarion finished in 17
th place with 89 points.
The Clarion diving contingent was led on Saturday by sophomore
Kristin Day. Day finished third on the three meter board with 491.70 points. She is now a 4-time NCAA D-II All-American at Clarion. She placed 5
th in 1 meter diving scoring 449.90 points on Thursday night and was a two-time A-A in 2012.
Teammate
Sarah Zerfoss (Fr. Shavertown) was 11
th on three meter with 414 points and
Lauren Slayton (Fr. White Lake, Mi.) was 16
th scoring 392 points. Zerfoss was also 7
th on 1 meter and Slayton was 10
th on 1 meter. It was their first trip to nationals.
In the pool
Gabriella Schaffer shattered her own school record in the 200 back finishing in 10
th place with a time of 2:01.81. She set the record in December at Akron with a time of 2:03.41, breaking the old record held by Lori Leitzinger at 2:03.71. Schaffer also placed 13
th in the 100 back on Friday and is a two-time All-American.
Teammate
Emilee Gysegem (So. Warren, Oh. Lakeview) placed 19
th with a time of 2:04.61 and missed an A-A placing. She did set the Clarion record in the 400 IM on Friday with a time of 4:26.35 and placed 10
th earning A-A honors.
Clarion senior
Kayla Shull (Franklin/Rocky Grove) wrapped up her swimming career with a 20
th placing in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.90. She was a 2-time All-American in 2013 placing 5
th in the 100 back with a new record time of 55.40 on Friday and placed 16
th in the 200 free on Thursday. She finished her career as a 15-time All-American.
The Golden Eagles are led by 13 year head coach Mark Van Dyke and assistant coach Brehan (Heebner) Kelley who is in her third season.

Dave Hrovat, in his 23
rd year, crowned 6 women's and 6 men's All-Americans at nationals… That gives Hrovat 38 national champions and 239 All-Americans he has coached in his career.
